Horizon - North Devon

Sea side holiday cottage

We are very proud of our house but prefer to let our guests tell you what a stay in Horizon is like . . . .

"A treasure perched above the sea,

Became awhile a home to me,

It's beauty knocked me off my socks,

I felt like I could eat the rocks,

- And drink the waves for tea!

Perfect holiday, thank you so much", Maxine, Thilo and family.

"We had an amazing week in Combe Martin, staying with 3 generations (grandparents/parents/2 children). I will miss the lovely view of the sea and the soothing sound of the waves. Brilliant accommodation with a very well equipped kitchen ;-) " Kirsten B and family, June 2017

"Horizon was a great place to stay, the house and Combe Martin are great but even better as a base for visiting places not to be missed such as Croyde and Woolacombe beaches, Clovelly, Lynton and Lynmouth. The view from the house is wonderful and it was lovely waking up to the sound of the waves lapping onto the beach."  Kevin and Beccy, May 2017.

"Lovely week was had by three generations. House is ideally located for a pop to the shops or the beach, also not far to drive to some of the many other beautiful beaches in Devon. Its clean, warm and spacious for everyone to have a little "quiet time" somewhere in the house. Best of all is going to sleep with the sound of gentle waves lapping the shoreline." C. Peasgood and family, April 2017.

"Having seen the description and read the reviews we had very high expectations, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. We already knew the area well from many a fondly remembered holiday along the coast at Hele Bay when our 2 children were growing up. This time we were back with 2 adult children, their partners and our two young granddaughters. I can wholeheartedly endorse all the positive comments in other reviews but rather than repeat them, I’ll mention a couple of welcome extras. One is that the kitchen is really very roomy – there’s a large area by the back door that isn’t apparent from the photo - with plenty of room to swing a cat, or in our case dodge the youngest pushing a babywalker along at breakneck speed. Secondly the house was surprisingly quiet – not just from outside noise but also internally (thick walls etc?), so even with early risers and youngsters crashing around, the rest of us were able to carry on sleeping peacefully; helped also by the (without exception) very comfortable beds. And with the location just perfect for popping down to the water’s edge with the little ones in between outings, all in all we had a really wonderful holiday. Would love to go back again soon." Mike W., August 2016

"This was an ideal place for all my family to be together in a fantastic location. With the sound of the sea at night and the well appointed property it was just perfect for all of us. Would certainly go again when in the area. Loved it!" P. Beauchamp and family, August 2016

"Horizon was great for our family holiday, grandparents, parents and kids had plenty of space so it didn't feel crowded and the house had everything we needed. The kids loved their bedroom and the toys to play with, which was a nice touch. All the bedrooms and bathrooms were lovely. The location of the house was a winner for us, a pebble beach right across the road and the main Combe Martin beach about 3 mins walk. We enjoyed sitting outside the front of the house in the evening, with a drink and enjoying the sea views! The kids loved crabbing in all the rock pools and beach cricket every night, along with kayaking and a trip to the local dinosaur park. We would definitely stay again." Joanna S and family, July 2016

"We had an amazing stay at Horizon. The house it's self is lovely and very nicely done on the inside. It's ideal for a family as there is so much space. The house is right on the beach so we spent our evenings going for a little swim and often had the little cove to ourselves when the tide was in. At night you can fall asleep to the lapping waves and first thing you can be up and exploring the beach within a couple of minutes from the front door. A great spot to explore North Devon, we couldn't recommend it more!" Ruth T., July 2016

"I stayed here with three friends and we all loved the house. In particular the sea views from the living room and some bedrooms is stunning. The house had all that we needed and is set in a remarkable part of the north Devon coast. We would all have loved to stay for a month as it was such a relaxing place to be. Great coastal and woodland walks, great local food and near the sculpture park at Broomfield. Idylic."  Shirley G., May 2016

"We stayed at Horizon for a week in May and we were delighted with both the house and its wonderful view of Combe Martin beach. The house is very well equipped, comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated. The location on a quiet street but at walking distance from shops and pubs in the village is excellent and also a great starting point for walks on Exmoor. We would fully recommend this place for a trip to the North Devon coast and with a little help from the weather our first trip to Devon was a great one. We would certainly book this property again!"  S. Bottelier and family, May 2016

"We had a great few days at Horizon. The house is in the perfect location to explore the rock pools and beach at Combe Martin, or to travel to the excellent Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. Our 2 and 5 year old had a ball exploring the rock pools and beach. The house is perfectly set up for a family holiday. There are even toys, games and books for wet weather days to keep the children happy. We really couldn't fault our stay and would thoroughly recommend it."  Will S. and family, April 2016

"We stayed for a week with my son ,wife and our 6 year old grandson. To say we were all impressed is an understatement. From the moment you step through the front door you feel as if you are in someone's home not a holiday rental.everything you could want is there especially the kitchen.buckets, spades, nets children's toys,DVDs, games,I could go on.we chose the first floor bedroom with balcony and fabulous sea views and made use of the large bathroom along the landing,my son, wife and grandson used the 3rd floor with 1 ensuite and separate shower room both to a high standard both bedrooms also having sea views. combe martin is a lovely old fashioned seaside with rocks and rock pools galore and horizon fits perfectly.the location is perfect and you could easily park your car and not move it as all shops etc are but a short stroll away.I highly recommend this lovely old house full of character. The owner Cassandra I found to be ultra efficient in her responses to any queries and very prompt in refunding holding deposit within 2 days of our return.we hope to stay again." The Johnson family, October 2015

"We stayed at Horizon for a week at the end of September and I have to say that we all found it to be one of the best holiday lets we have had. The house is clean, warm and has everything you may need for a stay in Combe Martin. The house is very spacious and would suit both small and larger groups (we were four adults and a toddler), shops are a short walk away and there are a number of other options further a field. We would definitely recommend this to others seeking a relaxing holiday in North Devon." The Da Costa family, September 2015

"Horizon delivered everything it promised, with stunning views, excellent accommodation, and a location that made family trips to the beach a 'spur of the moment' event; whilst the shops were a short walk away for any provisions we needed.  We are sure to return." The Hamilton family, August 2015

"We stayed at Horizon as a family group including my son and family who had driven over from Bulgaria. Our eldest daughter also came with us so there were five adults and two children. The house was plenty big enough and provided all our needs. Even though the weather was not so kind to us we still have a lovely holiday especially as the children (and grand dad) could find crabs, fish and shrimps in the multiple rock pools. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend Horizon for a large group and the location is great. Combe Martin is a lovely village and we did not find we needed to travel any further to find exactly what we were looking for." M Kerwin, July 2015

"We stayed here with our two young children (2 &4) and had a wonderful time in July 2015. The house was immaculate, and was perfect for our needs. We only needed two of the four bedrooms, but the location alone was what led us to book Horizon, and it didn't disappoint. The children were very excited to sleep in the bunk beds on one of the 2nd floor rooms, with a magnificent view of the beach, and we chose the 1st floor master, again with stunning views. We spent many hours reading on the balcony, and listening to the waves crash over the rocks on a night was a real treat. The house was very well equipped with everything we needed, plus there were toys and games aplenty to keep two very active toddlers entertained whenever we were at home, along with fishing nets, buckets and spades for when we were out. The patio in front of the house was great for evening meals and barbecues. There is a road in front of the house, but it is only really used by residents so traffic was practically non-existent, so the only sounds were of the sea. We were able to walk down to the quieter beach in front of the house in literally a couple of minutes, and the larger main beach and village centre was just a 5 minute walk away. Combe Martin itself is a quaint little town, with enough shops, eateries and pubs to fill the week with, but still fairly quiet, even in July. Overall we had a great time staying at Horizon, the house was faultless, and the location is second to none. Highly recommended." The Acaster family, July, 2015

"Horizon is the perfect holiday rental. There were seven of us (me, my wife, son, other son and girlfriend, mother and father in-law) and there was plenty of space for everyone both in the bedrooms and in the living areas. It had everything you could require for a week away (and probably for two), the kitchenware was plentiful, the oven worked really well, the washing machine was a bonus and the wifi was excellent! All the bedrooms were beautifully equipped and the two bathrooms on the top floor were fantastic. It's location was spot on, right next to a pebble beach with fantastic rock formations and just a short walk from Combe Martin village centre and it's sandy beach. Both pubs in the village were great, good drinks and excellent food, and the Indian beach cafe is well worth a visit. It was good to have two off road parking spaces to the rear of the property as well, which meant you could park your car and forget it for the week if you wanted to. Combe Martin is very hilly though so you should bear this in mind if any of your party has walking difficulties. Overall I would highly recommend a stay in Horizon.", P. Broadway and family, June 2015

"We have enjoyed a marvelous family holiday in Combe Martin with two families staying in Horizons, another couple at the nearby hotel and grandparents in their camper a few hundred yards away. A perfect combination. The house is exactly as it appears in the photos and very much improved since the last time we rented it in the 1980's!!  Combe Martin is an ideal spot for children with the beach and rock pools, and if the weather is disappointing lots of jigsaws and books to keep them occupied. The Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle proved excellent days out and we enjoyed a family pub lunch in the gardens of The Pack of Cards. Great walks and even a cruise from Ilfracombe. I would not hesitate to recommend this property and intend to rebook next year" Ellie Barker and family, June 2015.

"A really great holiday house. Perfect for 2 families. The views from the property are amazing and the house is over the road from a great pebble beach. Combe Martin main beach is a 3 min walk away. The top floor has a double room with en suite and bunk bed room with shower/toilet bathroom. The middle floor has a large double, with great sea views, twin bedded room, and large bathroom with bath and separate shower. Great fully equipped kitchen. 2 parking spaces behind property. The front of the property looks onto a pebble beach, which the children loved. Exmoor Zoo and Watermouth Castle are nearby and highly recommended if you have children. The owner is very helpful with email correspondence and prompt to sort out any problems quickly. We had a great week and hope to go back. Would recommend this property", The Crandon family, April, 2015

"Beautiful house in Combe Martin. We are two families with children and we stayed at Horizon a week in February. One of the activities that the children enjoyed most was walking and exploring the beach and rocky shore at low tide. The house has a good size for two families, with three comfortable floors and new bathrooms in the second floor. Cassandra was very kind and helpful when we contacted her.  Even when we forgot some clothes after our stay in Horizon, she was happy to send them by post to us.  We highly recommend this house." Ana and family, February, 2015.

"We had a fantastic stay in horizon! Such a beautiful place, and in a fantastic location. Exactly what we were hoping for and it gave all members of our family the chance to enjoy being by the sea, even those not so keen to go walking in the rain!! We'd have no hesitation in recommending Horizon to friends and really hope to come again sometime. Thanks very much and Happy New Year to you". Simon and Adele Chalk, December 2014.

"Booking as two families for our annual Autumn get together, we found the ideal retreat in Horizon. The accommodation is laid out over three floors, with a family bathroom and two bedrooms to each upper floor. The top floor has the bonus of an en-suite to the double bedroom. Our only dilemma was who should take the large master bedroom with it's own balcony and sea view, over who should take the good sized double with sea view and en-suite. Suffice to say, we were all happy with our rooms - a tall order when sharing with another family. No-one felt that they had drawn the short straw. In addition the house is fully equipped with everything you need. Particularly the kitchen. As we are avid home cooks, we came planning a Sunday Roast, and to make our own hearty soup, to sip on the beach. Everything was in order to be able to make our meals: A large roasting tray for the meat, plenty of pots and pans and even a stick blender! The indoor dining room adequately seated us all, for enjoyable meal times. Our favourite place however, was to sit as a group, at the little table on the front patio which overlooks the sea; eating our bacon sandwiches in the morning, listening to the waves crash and the cry of the seagulls. Or watching the sun turn the sky pink against the sea, in the evening whilst sipping a glass of beer. It fed the soul. Our children loved exploring the rock pools on the beach; the tide went out in the late afternoon and with the house being in such close proximity, we were able to monitor the rhythms of the sea then seize our moment to venture down to the beach armed with buckets and nets (which were kindly provided at the house). We adults sat sipping a drink whilst the children explored the pools and crannies, skimming stones into the sea. Really there was little need to leave Horizon except to take a stroll that ends in one of the many pubs in the village - our favourite being the Pack of Cards. We also recommend the local butcher (en route) for excellent Streaky Bacon and Sausage. Many thanks to Cassandra for being so helpful and accommodating, providing us with everything needed for an ideal short break. We will definitely be returning next year." Vikki Pitman and family, October 2014

"Your property is stunning! I loved the mix between the period features and the modern furnishings and original artwork. We had a wonderful meal in The Dolphin on Saturday night and I would recommend it.  The whole weekend was a great success. My Mum is not very agile but she loved to sit on the bench that overlooks the beach, whilst the more active in the family had a fantastic coastal walk. Great property, great location and great company - the perfect weekend. Thank you for your part in it." Susan Paul and family, September 2014

"We chose this property for a family break after a long fruitless search. We knew if we kept searching we would find the perfect house and this proved to be the case. The location and the views at the front of the house are stunning. The house is spotlessly clean and contains everything you need. Cassandra was very helpful with any queries we had regarding the house and provided us with comprehensive instructions once our booking was made. My 82 year old mother came with us and she was able to move around the three storey house with no problems. I would not hesitate to recommend this house to my family and friends. We visited Woolacombe, Lynton and Lynmouth, Porlock Weir and Saunton Sands. We visited Watermouth Castle which was interesting but the rides were too small for my ten year old grandson. He did enjoy looking around the castle though and looking at the boats moored in the bay opposite. We ate in the Dolphin Inn a few times and found the food very good. We all agreed this is the best holiday home we have ever stayed in and we all loved Combe Martin for it's peace and quiet." The Gaughan family, August 2014

"We had a wonderful time. Horizon is a lovely house, very comfortable with all we needed for a lovely holiday. The views are spectacular. Being so close to the beach was so convenient. My granddaughters loved visiting the rockpools at low tide. We visited Woolacombe and Croyde Bay where they had their first experience of bodyboarding in the surf. All in all it couldn't have been better. Thank you very much for all the information provided." The Price family, August 2014

"Just the place for a perfect holiday. Horizon is equipped with everything a family could need for a great holiday - even fishing nets and buckets and spades! The house is lovingly decorated and furnished and the surrounding area is breathtaking. We couldn't get enough of the view from the front windows and loved sitting at the front of the house and enjoying the amazing and ever-changing scenery. Will definitely remember this for future holidays." Maxine, Thilo and family, June 2014

"Wonderful house in a perfect setting - just right for us. We came across Horizon whilst on holiday a few years ago and saw it was now a holiday let so took a photo of the details displayed on the front of the house. My brother lived there more than ten years ago and sadly died recently so we wanted to have a reunion with his friends in Combe Martin. Horizon was a perfect base to have our holiday and all of our visitors were very impressed with the work that has been done on the property in recent years . Would recommend to all for a stay - ideal for two families as the two top floors give plenty of privacy." Lynn Thomas and family, May 2014

"A lovely house, well laid out with all the facilities you could need. The views from the main bedroom balcony and the front patio are just brilliant. The location, just on the edge of Combe Martin gives you access to all the facilities in the town within an easy walk. Nothing much else to add except to endorse all the other reviews. Definitely a place we will stay again, Cassandra provides very helpful information prior to the stay as well." John Mason and family, April 2014

"We enjoyed our stay at Horizon very much. We found the house very well equipped and comfortable, and large enough to accommodate all eight of us in such spacious rooms. The children enjoyed the many toys and books there, and they all loved playing hide-and-seek on all three floors of the house. We all enjoyed the view over the bay and being able to walk across the road and down to the beach. The rock pools were fantastic for crabbing and it was exciting trying to outrun the waves as the tide came in! We managed a short walk along the coastal path with a magnificent view of Combe Martin, and made full use of the cafes and pubs in the village. We ventured into Ilfracombe one afternoon for a cream-tea near the harbour and watched the Halloween Parade and fireworks in Combe Martin. We had a very enjoyable week and hope one day to come back. Thank you." Jennifer Howells and family, October 2013

"My boyfriend and I had a wonderful 6 night stay here in September. The house is stunning and overlooks the bay at Combe Martin. The house is extremely well equipped and very cosy in the evenings after fun filled days! The house could easily accommodate two families and the surrounding areas have plenty of activities for both adults and children around the coastline and into exmoor national park. We particularly enjoyed the walk up to hangmans point. The front garden is perfect for evenings sat drinking wine and watching the sun go down over the little bay in front of the house. A perfect retreat for anyone, highly recommended." Lucy Morris, September 2013

"From the very first email I received from Cassandra when I made an enquiry I was impressed with this house. I wanted a house on the beach so that my young children could play in the rock pools and on the beach easily. Cassandra emailed how her own young family use the house and have easy access to the shops which are all a short walk away. They use the home for holidays themselves which is always a good sign and Cassandra described how she loves to sit in the first floor bay window in the rocking chair watching the waves - I spent many hours doing this with the door open and the cooling breeze coming in! The children loved the nets and buckets to catch crabs in the many rock pools and loved climbing the rocks.. As this area is very tidal the rock pools are brilliant. We rarely return to the same place twice but we may make an exception here. This is a great location for families or walkers or just as a base to explore the area."  Sharon Smith and family, August 2013

"We stayed here for a week in the summer with our two boys and our friends who also have two children. The parking spaces were great as the spaces did get taken on the lane outside. The house was really well equipped and it was convenient that we ordered a tesco delivery for the day we arrived so we didn't have to go out to the shops. Cassandra was excellent in her replies to emails etc before booking and also got back to you immediately with responses. It was lovely to be so close to the sea and listen to the waves when you were going to sleep at night. We were fortunate that we had reasonable weather and also it was carnival week in Combe Martin so there was a nice atmosphere. Close to pubs and shops (we had a lovely meal at the Pack of Cards). I would definitely recommend to others." Sharon Dennison and family, August 2013

"Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful seaside cottage. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time".  The Harman Family, July 2013

"We are from Berlin/Germany and we spent one week of our summer vacation in Combe Martin. "Horizon" was the perfect place to be. A spacious Victorian house with a new kitchen, comfy rooms and a stunning view from the bedrooms. It is located just a few meters from the Newberry Beach, actually no sand beach, but the tide pools make up for it! The children loved to play there for hours collecting shells and having fun. Our recommendations for the village: Black and White Fish & Chips (we became almost addicted) The Combe Martin Museum (If you are interested in the history of the place; very helpful people there, spending a lot of time to explain everything to us)" The Gebert family, June 2013

"We were very lucky with the weather and had a really lovely time. The house was just perfect for us all and we couldn't think of suggestions for improvement as it had it all."  Julie Britton, May 2013

"We can highly recommend Horizon. The house is light and spacious, and beautifully decorated, making the most of the Victorian features. Love all the fireplaces and the tiled hallway! The beds are all comfy with lovely linen, and we really appreciated all the extra touches like toys and books for the kids, buckets, spades and nets, firestarters, dishwasher tablets, handwash, all the things that are not always there in a holiday rental! It meant we could just settle in and enjoy ourselves immediately. Fabulous, well-equipped kitchen, beautiful bay windows to make the most of the sea views, and the brand new downstairs loo was a real bonus! The printed out walking info was really helpful, thank you! Loved Black and White fisn n chips, delicious, and the croissants from the deli were absolutely incredible, could have been in France! We only wish we could have had longer. Our 3 year old adored her bunk bed, bedtime was not a chore at all!  Thank you very much to Cassandra who has been an absolute pleasure to deal with, prompt responses and all the information we could need. See you again!". Libby Oborne, March 2013

"We had a lovely stay at Horizon. The house is well equiped and tastefully decorated and furnished. The beds are comfortable and have good quality linen. There are plenty of towels and the shower is excellent. I love the location overlooking the beach. There was always an unseemly scamble to secure the window seat to gaze out at the view although a seat by the fire was popular too! We had a great holiday and would definitely return". Catherine Twigg, November 2012

"The house itself is well equipt, particularly the kitchen. My 2 year old son enjoyed playing with the toys, games, fishing nets and buckets and spades provided. The house is lovely and spacious, nicely decorated and very clean. Also loved the views and nice having the beach on the doorstep. The location was great, lovely deli down the road and a general shop for bits and bobs. We enjoyed exploring the area by foot as there are lovely walks from the house but we also did the small drive to Ilfracombe where we enjoyed some good food. Would definately like to return again in the future". Chris Byard, October 2012

"We had a great holiday in Combe Martin and were all very impressed with the house and would definitely like to come again next year." The Lindfield family, September 2012

"The house and location were just superb and I have to admit to no small amount of jealousy at your owning such a brilliant holiday home. It fitted all our needs perfectly and the children loved the room at the top of the house and the toys. I am just in the process of gaining the school holiday dates so as to book a return visit next year." Mrs G. and family, August 2012
